O Captain! My Captain!

for tenor and piano quintet

commissioned by Leonardo Carmelo Escobar, tenor
Program Note:
The poem “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman has long been a personal favorite of mine. In order to convey the agony felt by the poem’s narrator in my setting, I combined shifting rhythmic patterns with tonal harmonies and expressive vocal lines.

O Captain! My Captain! (2016) was commissioned by Leonardo Escobar, tenor.
